10 Facts about Pomegranates

Pomegranates are one of my favorites for the Christmas time. Because the pomegranates growing season is September to December this fruit tends to be considered a Thanksgiving or Christmas treat. This is also the reason it has been given the nickname "The Jewel of Winter".


 Since the holidays are coming up and pomegranates are starting to pop up it the fruit sections at the grocery stores, I wanted to share with you some interesting facts about Pomegranates.







1. The name Pomegranate means apple with many seeds.

2. Pomegranates belong to the berry family.

3. Pomegranates are considered a super fruit. (A super fruit is "Any fruit supposed to confer remarkable health benefits". )

4. Pomegranates contain vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

5. Because pomegranates are full of antioxidants, eating or drinking pomegranate juice will help reduce plaque build up on your teeth.

6. Pomegranates can be stored up to two months in the refrigerator.

7. Pomegranate trees will only grow and produce fruit in a very dry climate. 
For the United States pomegranates usual growing season is 
September through December.

8. Pomegranates are originally from the middle east.

9. Many scholars believe that it was the pomegranate that tempted 
Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden rather than the apple. 

10. Pomegranate trees can grow for up to 200 years.
